HARVARD CLUB WELCOMES NEW ACKLAND MUSEUM DIRECTOR PETER NISBET with special exhibit tour

Peter Nisbet, former Daimler-Benz Curator of Harvard’s Busch-Reisinger Museum, was appointed Chief Curator of the Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill in late 2009. Harvard Club members will welcome Nisbet to North Carolina at a private event at the Ackland on Wednesday, July 14.

The event will include guided tours of Fortune Smiles: The Tyche Foundation Gift, an exhibition that opened in May. The exhibit features 51 works of art, representing the most significant acquisition in the history of the Ackland Art Museum. The works were donated by Charles Millard MA ’63, PhD ’71, an avid collector, connoisseur, and former director of the Ackland (1986-93). Millard will be with us at this exclusive Harvard event.

Agenda for Wednesday, July 14:

6:00 p.m. - 6:35 p.m. – Check-in; Meet-and-greet with wine and hors d’oeuvres reception

6:35 p.m. - 6:50 p.m. – Brief remarks in the Yager Gallery with Peter Nisbet and other Ackland Museum staff

6:50 p.m. - 7:50 p.m. Two to three guided tours (15-20 minutes each) of the Fortune Smiles exhibit.

Note: Reception will run through the entire evening. Other museum exhibits will also be open for viewing.

Peter Nisbet - Chief Curator of the Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill

Peter Nisbet holds a BA and MA from Cambridge University and a PhD in the History of Art from Yale University. He has held assistantships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at Yale University Art Gallery. Before joining the Ackland, Nisbet served as the Daimler-Benz Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum at the Harvard Art Museum, where he was responsible for a collection of 39,000 works of art ranging from the Middle Ages to the present and played a leading role in the reconceptualization and revitalization of the museum, leading to its relocation in 1991. A leading expert in Russian and German art of the twentieth century, Nisbet has organized several major international traveling exhibitions on European art between the wars and has published catalogues and essays on Russian and Soviet Modernism, El Lissitzky, German Modernism, contemporary art, and on issues of museum history, theory, and practice.

Charles Millard - Former Director of the Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill

Charles Millard attended Princeton University for his undergraduate degree and completed his graduate studies at Harvard University. He has held curatorial positions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and from 1986-1993 was Director of the Ackland Art Museum. Millard is a celebrated connoisseur and patron whose acuity and generosity has benefited cultural institutions across the country.
